As their blog gained traction, it became more than just a source of income; it became a beacon of inspiration to many.

However, in May 2021, a shift in Google’s algorithm unexpectedly reduced their visibility — crushing their business and the hopes of an entire community — illustrating the precarious balance between technology and human aspiration.

As you must have started to realize by now — otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this — artificial intelligence has started with a blast, already reshaping our world at cutthroat speed. As many are also starting to realize; the story we live in, matters more than almost anything, when it comes to our experience of life, business, and the world — and when it comes to actual outcomes.

As such, understanding AI’s impact on society and harnessing the power of storytelling in business as well as personal growth are now perhaps more crucial than ever.

The AI Revolution: Charting Unprecedented Growth and Change

The evolution of AI is reshaping every facet of our lives at a pace that is both exhilarating and daunting.

Think of the phenomenal rise of ChatGPT, which reached 1 million users in a mere five days, compared to the years it took Netflix to achieve that same milestone. In the realms of education and marketing, AI’s integration is equally staggering. By the end of 2023, between 49% and 58% of students were already leveraging AI tools for school work, and over 73% of marketers had adopted AI technologies.

Understanding Self and Identity Amidst Technological Change

In the middle of this rapid technological evolution, a critical question emerges: Who are we, and how do we define our identity?

These questions apply equally to our personal identities, our business or professional persona’s, and the identity of the company or brand we represent or are otherwise associated with. When we take a holistic perspective, we soon discover that it is near impossible to separate these three distinct types of identities, and it is equally impossible — or at least fairly ineffective — to approach them purely separately.

I am firmly convinced that these fundamental questions about who we are and who we are becoming, are always incredibly important for us to come back to, regularly. I also whole-heartedly believe that there’s never been a time where it’s been more important to think about these questions, than the times we live in now.

Meanwhile, in our same reality:

Surveys reveal that only 10% to 15% of people possess a deep self-awareness, so as to be able to say that they “Know who they are”. Moreover, a PricewaterhouseCoopers study found that only half of company leaders can articulate a distinctive identity for their organizations, with a mere 20% believing their employees could do the same.

This gap in self-awareness and corporate identity in the AI age signifies a profound need for introspection and narrative clarity.

The Importance of Personal Insight for Personal & Business Growth in the Age of AI

In a world where AI is omnipresent, personal insight into our own identities becomes not just a luxury, but a necessity for mental health, calm, and clarity. All important ingredients, of course, for personal and professional growth.

My new book “Life Beyond AI” illustrates this through stories and insights from deep research, highlighting the journey towards self-discovery and the crucial role it plays in personal as well as business growth and navigating the challenges posed by AI.

Similarly, the second book I’m publishing currently, together with StoryLab.ai and my own company, Neo Alpha — “Growth Storytelling” emphasizes the significance of an organization’s identity. Coming from a professional background in the world of marketing and business growth — but with a firm foundation in developmental psychology and personal growth as well — a few things have been becoming overly clear to me especially over the past few years:

  • It’s incredibly difficult to become or to remain relevant in marketing if you don’t adopt significant new technology fast enough and in strategic alignment.
  • Brands can only be successful if they’re successfully aligned with personal stories, goals, and values — first internally with the people that work for and with the brand, and then externally with the people to whom the brand intends to cater and sell.
  • Personal growth, professional growth, and business growth all are connected— each has a link to brand, each has a link to technology, and none of the three can logically be approached separately, no matter how hard we try to stay true to age-old internal views or company silos.
